21 Episode XX I

If there’s no way to make an end of things, then perhaps prayer will work.

That’s right! When people asked Siddhartha about the continuity of life, Siddhartha was dumbfounded, for the idea of continuity had never occurred to him. All along he had been fixated on the end of things, so the idea of continuity gave him quite a shock.

Making an end of suffering amounts to leaving the world with all its attendant tribulation.

He never realized that most people are looking for a way to live well.

Moreover, while one is still in the world, one lives in dependence on others. Even if one reduces the demands of life to a minimum, one still has to rely on others to some extent. If everything were to come to an end, it would amount to ending one’s relationships with others, in which case one’s previous interdependence would have been nothing but a dream.

Siddhartha could not accept that it’s a dream, which for him is the same as eating shengzhi. He had been eaten by the wolf, and the feeling of being devoured made him certain that it was not a dream.

If he didn't resist with all his strength, he would not have survived the ordeal.

Siddhartha was trying to open a window onto the world, so as to see the lives of others.
