Returning One’s Flesh and Bones to One’s Parents – The Lotus Reborn

Returning One’s Flesh and Bones to One’s Parents – The Lotus Reborn

Professor Hsu Chin-Chuan, chairman of the Good Liver Foundation, has shown profound compassion toward his cousin, Teacher Chih-Mei.

Years ago, I came to know Mr. Chen Chin-Shan from Donggang, Pingtung. I was deeply impressed by his medical skills and diagnostic ability, even though he was an amateur. Medical workers labor tirelessly—they deserve our respect!

From a Buddhist point of view, the human body involves not only one’s work, emotions, and family (bloodline), but also one’s life experiences. From this perspective, the study of the human body becomes a wondrous field of insight.

Medical literature today—ranging from clinical studies to psychology—has become a boundless universe.

I used to have little interest in medicine, even though some of my family members were doctors of Western medicine when I was young. But after meeting Mr. Chen Chin-Shan, I developed a deep fascination with medicine.

Now, I gradually realize that the mysteries of the human body are as boundless as an abyss—impossible to fully explore.

Through observing the aging and illness of the practitioners at Nanzan Vihara, as well as my own, I feel as if another gate has opened —one that allows me to view the vast world anew. This, to me, is far more fascinating than repeatedly analyzing the Buddhist concepts of “mind and mental factors.”

One’s bones, flesh, and blood are never truly free.
This issue presents a tremendous challenge for any spiritual practitioner and it cannot be grasped by rote recitation or repeated contemplation on a single point.

For my part, I have taken the Dharma as my foundationand continued to extend and deepen it.

Master Banji
