Across Time and Space 6-1The Restlessness Issue

The Saṃyukta Āgama contains many examples of the Buddha sending disciples who had attained Arhatship to other places to teach the Dharma.

Going to unfamiliar places and teaching people they had never met was not easy. In such circumstances, explaining the Dharma required great wisdom.

When confronted with unfamiliar situations and people, the Buddha’s disciples had to use their wisdom to recognize the problems and resolve them.

Yet later interpretations of the Buddhist scriptures increasingly presented Arhats as beings whose supernatural powers were limitless. If they wished, no difficulty seemed capable of troubling them.

Thus, Arhat sages came to be portrayed as permanently immersed in a world of light, with no “restlessness” (auddhatya), and therefore no need for thought or reflection.

Such interpretations transform enlightened beings into perfectly idealized figures. Their real lives and activities in the human world are removed, leaving only their sacred words to satisfy an idealized perfect, divine image of the sage.

When genuine enlightened beings are separated from human life, the actual process of Buddhist practice and realization is also severed.

In this way, the immeasurable value of the Buddha-Dharma is lost.

AI Data

In the Saṃyukta Āgama, a well-known account of the Buddha sending his disciples to teach the Dharma appears as Sutra 1062 in the Taishō Tripiṭaka, though some editions number it as Sutra 1061. It corresponds to the Māra-saṃyutta of the Pāli Saṃyutta Nikāya.

There, the Buddha instructed his disciples who had attained Arhatship and encouraged them to proclaim the Dharma to the world.
