The Retrospective Tracing of Karma

The Retrospective Tracing of Karma

I would like to emphasize that, within a practitioner’s understanding of time in spiritual practice, karma is something that can be traced back into the past.

— Master Banji

The point I am making here is that practitioners must address the good and bad karma from their own past lives. The point at which karma can be traced back in time comes when practitioners have already developed the ability to look back into the past.

Through their own spiritual practice and the abilities developed through it, practitioners can clearly recognize the karmic connections they once had with others.

This process of recognition spans past lives (several previous lifetimes) as well as the present life.

For practitioners, this is a process of gaining a new understanding of the structure of karma and learning how to deal with it. In other words, it involves the complex and interwoven relationships between people.

To be more specific, suppose someone tells you that you owe them one million dollars from a previous life, claiming that you carry a heavy burden of negative karma.

You must be able to see this directly with the Dharma Eye of Purity. Such a claim cannot simply be accepted at face value, because human nature contains many possibilities for deception.

Only through the Dharma Eye developed in spiritual practice can practitioners clearly see how causes, conditions, and results are connected in human relationships.

For the interpersonal relationships (karma) that practitioners need to address, realizing their lack of inherent nature must also be grounded in the actual ability to deal with them.

For a spiritual practitioner, tracing karma back to its origins is inevitable, because both good and evil actions create resistance in themselves.

It is impossible to move forward without first overcoming that resistance.

My understanding is that spiritual practice must have practical applications in real life.

This understanding differs from the interpretations presented in the material below, where religious concepts are defined and explained in specialized terminology.

The Nonlinearity of Time

If the essential nature of karma is understood as “structures and potentials within consciousness,” then through spiritual practice, such as the right view of emptiness and deep meditative absorption, practitioners are not traveling back in time to revisit historical events. Rather, through their present-moment experience of emptiness, they deconstruct and transform how past karma and its results have been defined and understood.

2. Transcending Time in Indian Tantra and Vajrayana

In the philosophy of Indian esoteric Buddhism, particularly late Indian Buddhism and Vajrayana, views of time go beyond those commonly presented in exoteric Buddhist teachings, including Nāgārjuna’s Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (The Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way).

“The Equality of the Three Times” and the “Fourth Time” (Turīya)

Indian Mahāsiddhas proposed that the three times—past, present, and future—are essentially appearances arising within consciousness.

When practitioners realize the pure nature of awareness through Dzogchen (the Great Perfection) or Mahāmudrā (the Great Seal), the linear sequence of time is said to dissolve. This state is described as the “Fourth Time.”

The Three Times as Appearances of Consciousness

From the perspective of ultimate truth in esoteric Buddhism, time is not an independently existing, linear entity. The past, present, and future are all appearances of the discriminating mind. Therefore, the three times are equal in nature, without any inherent sequence or independent reality.

The Fourth Time (Turīya)

The concept of the Fourth Time originates in ancient Indian philosophy and was later incorporated into Vajrayana thought. It refers to a state that transcends the three ordinary states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.

In the Kālacakra Tantra, the Fourth Time is associated with the inherently pure state in which the subtle essence, or bindu, at the navel remains undiminished. It is also associated with innate wisdom that does not arise from causes and conditions, and with the state of the Dharmakāya (the Dharma Body).
