業力清𥇦結構後語A Clear Structural View of Karma — Postscript

A Clear Structural View of Karma — Postscript

Dear readers,

The purpose of the Buddha’s teaching is not only faith. For practitioners, it is about understanding the Dharma and developing a structured form of intelligence grounded in cognition and reasoning.

In addition to benefiting practitioners themselves, it also provides a correct theoretical explanation of the Dharma to society, contributing to the well-being of others.

This is what modern practitioners and learners of Buddhism, within the context of contemporary education, should strive for.

Master Banji

Below is a note written on October 1.

Dharma-constancy knowledge (dhamma-ṭhiti-ñāṇa)

This refers to a form of intelligence in which the content of the Dharma is fully understood by cognition. It should not be reduced to mere textual knowledge.

If one remains only at the level of words, then one would have to assume that sages are everywhere.

Here, “knowing” is a verb meaning “to realize,” “to understand,” or “to directly comprehend.”

The key question for practitioners is whether their cognitive capacity has attained a form of transcendent wisdom (prajñā), with clear and penetrating understanding of the Dharma.

This cannot be answered by others.

It is easy to misunderstand the depth of the question.

Master Banji

In the context of Buddhist scriptures, especially the Āgamas, the phrase “first comes the knowledge of dhamma-ṭhiti (dharma-constancy knowledge)” uses “dharma-constancy knowledge” as a noun.

More specifically, its grammatical and doctrinal structure is as follows:

1. Grammatical structure

• First: adverb — “initially” or “as the first step”
• Know: verb — “to realize,” “to understand,” “to directly know”
• Dharma-constancy knowledge: compound noun referring to the wisdom that understands causality and dependent arising

Meaning of the full phrase:

“First, one attains the knowledge of dhamma-ṭhiti (the wisdom of understanding dependent arising and causal order), and only afterwards can one attain the knowledge of nirvāṇa.”
