Treating Illness 1
Greetings, friends of NanZen!
In 2023, my secular cousin came to me for
help—she was ill and hoped I could assist her.
After examining her condition, I told
her,
"The cancer cells have spread from
your kidneys to your liver. There may be no way to help."
That night, I called her eldest sister and
advised her,
"You need to be mentally prepared.
Since it has reached the liver, she may have only three months left. If there
are things to take care of, they should be handled quickly."
(Of course, I only provided this as a
reference.)
Because she still looked fine on the
outside, no one believed me.
She went to Taichung Veterans General
Hospital for an examination. The hospital initially said surgery was
possible.
Since I was only offering my perspective, I
told her to follow the doctors’ advice.
After further consultation at the hospital,
the hospital confirmed that the cancer had indeed reached the liver. At the
last moment, they decided against surgery.
I told my cousin,
"I cannot save you, but I can help you
avoid desperate treatments and unnecessary expenses."
A few days later, she told me,
"A friend recommended a temple in
Taipei that can extend people’s lives. Their whole family has been blessed
there."
I replied,
"But where does that extra life come
from? There are things that ordinary people may choose to do, but a true practitioner
should not —and will not—do them.
If it is time for you to pass away, then
pass away naturally, rather than owing someone a life after death.”
Even when facing the greatest crisis of her
life, she remained rational and listened to my words.
Her husband's family knew doctors at Taipei
Cathay General Hospital, but even they couldn’t help. (I don’t know the
details.)
She spent over three months going back and
forth between home and the hospital before passing away. (During this time, the
Heart Sutra was recited.)
The reason I share this is to illustrate
the principle of Causes, Conditions, and Karmic Results. As Buddhists, we must
believe in Causes, Conditions, and Karmic Results—there is no such thing as a
free lunch, let alone an extra life given for nothing.
Originally, I try not to talk about this,
but seeing the chaotic state of the world today, I felt the need to offer a
reminder.
Since the Japanese colonial era, Taiwan’s
medical schools have attracted the most intelligent minds. If even such highly trained experts
cannot cure cancer, it is impossible for just anyone to miraculously extend
life.
In everything, everyone has what they can
do and what they cannot do.
Also, while Ganoderma (Lingzhi) itself is
not harmful, once an illness has developed, it should not be consumed
recklessly—otherwise, why would traditional Chinese medicine even exist?
Just sharing this as a reference.

Treating Illness 2
Later, when I was chatting with a doctor, I
told him my cousin's story. He actually said that if a master can see, he /she
should be able to heal the disease.
I told him that it’s impossible, and as a doctor who has studied anatomy, he
should understand what the changes in organs look like when they’re diseased!
It’s surprising that even a doctor would view spiritual practice in such a way.
I find this kind of thinking very absurd.
Spiritual practice is not about changing
the impossible. It’s about seeing if there’s a chance to alter something before
the "causes" manifest. It’s like a health check, where we try to
identify the cause before a problem develops. This is the best time to deal
with it. Once the organs have already changed, healing may be impossible—it
would be like needing a new body to start fresh in the next life!
Buddhists should reflect on how we
understand the Dharma we absorb. Why do we pursue turning the impossible into
possible, creating so-called "miracles"? In my opinion, these are
unacceptable and absurd ideas.
Understanding what your brain absorbs can
help you do many things better. This, I believe, is the true miracle.
Even if you want to create a miracle that
turns the impossible into the possible, you still need to find the right point
to focus on. Without that, neither the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, nor God can help
you.
Of course, my cousin also helplessly
accepted that I couldn’t save her, but at least she didn’t waste money or owe
someone a life.

Treating Illness 3
About 25 years ago, there was a case
involving a healthcare professional. She had serious stomach issues, but even
after being examined at two major hospitals and undergoing two MRI scans, the
doctors couldn’t find the cause. She was already feeling very unwell, but the
doctors were hesitant to proceed with surgery.
She asked me to perform a merit transfer
(dedication of spiritual merit) to see if it could help identify the problem.
During the process, I saw that part of her large intestine was completely
blocked. I thought, “How is this possible? If that’s the case, how is she able
to eat?”
Over the phone, I asked her about her
eating situation.
She said, “Whatever I eat, I throw
up.”
The moment I heard that, I was sure my
vision was correct. I immediately urged her to undergo emergency surgery. I
said, “There’s no mistake—go ahead with the surgery!”
This case was truly extraordinary. What
kind of mystical force could interfere with medical equipment so much that even
MRIs couldn’t detect the problem? She believed she had been cursed.
Fortunately, she is still healthy today.
I have helped with many cases through merit
transfer, including couples struggling with IVF. I jokingly say that I have
"strayed from my ‘proper’ duties”. But these experiences have given me
deep insights and a sense of gratitude.
However, my main focus is still spiritual
cultivation. Later on, I instructed my inner-circle disciples not to discuss
merit transfer with outsiders—I simply don’t have the time. Now that I’m older,
I just want to contribute my experiences to society.

Illness 4
There
was once a one-month-old baby who stayed in the intensive care unit for two
months. Despite numerous tests showing no bacteria, the baby couldn’t get
better and had a fever. Based on my knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine,
I suspected the baby might have "false heat" (虚热) rather than an infection. I consulted a trusted TCM
doctor, who recommended adding a piece of Panax Ginseng to the baby’s milk.
After taking just a piece of Panax Ginseng, the baby was discharged from the
hospital.
(This is
for reference only; please consult a doctor.)
This
approach, as shown in Dr. Zhuang Shuqing’s story, is effective when there are
no issues with the body’s other organs.
