6 Siddhartha VI

流浪者之歌6 Siddhartha VI(悉達多的流浪故事)

The village for which Siddhartha served as the spiritual guide had a long history as a seat of learning, attracting lots of erudite scholars keen on deepening their knowledge and passing it on to others.

Everyone living in the village was proud of its reputation as a center of scholarship, so much so that only virtuous pundits were allowed to stay there. These learned scholars taught their respective subjects day and night, as all the villagers eagerly listened. Each lecture began and concluded with such words as, “If you don’t learn this well, you will be reborn as a lowly creature,” thereby making everyone even more intent on their studies. Some imparted practical knowledge useful for making a living; others taught how to turn an animal into a human being; others taught the proper way to sit and stand; still others instructed their pupils in how to learn the secrets of the universe by observing water.

In this way, year after year, the villagers sedulously accumulated such a surfeit of knowledge that they began to confuse one teacher for another!

Eventually, some began to wonder if there might be some kind of food one could eat to enhance the functioning of the brain, obviating intensive study of abstruse subjects and bringing about rebirth on a higher grade of existence.

For the purpose of discussing this issue, the villagers convened a meeting, at which it was agreed that only shengzhi would be eaten in the village, so as to increase the efficiency of their studies, allowing them more time and energy for other things.

Thus they promptly set about planting shengzhi, which soon became their staple food.

5 Siddhartha V

5  Siddhartha V

Siddhartha’s teacher was highly regarded as a great sage. However, the next time Siddhartha came to see him, it took him a while to regain his composure. For it was very difficult forSiddhartha’s teacher to accept that his most promising disciple had become so narrow minded. He wanted know where in the world he had gotten this idea about zhengzhiand what it was about this zhengzhi that had made such an excellent disciple become so narrow minded.

To this end, Siddhartha’s teacher put on a disguise and paid a visit to the village. Nobody recognized him, but everyone noticed this strange character snooping around the village.

When it came time to eatSiddhartha’s teacher took out the food he had brought with him. Much to his surprise, he was soon surrounded by everyone in the village, who indignantly informed him, “In this village of ours only shengzhi may be eaten; everything else is strictly forbidden---no exceptions!” Hoping to put their doubts and indignation to rest, he quickly revealed his identity, but to no avail.

Much to his surprise, they told him, “You must be some kind of a devil, intent on deceiving us. Our highly esteemed wise man only eats shengzhi, and if you don’t eat it as well, you must surely be a fraud!”

Thereupon the Siddhartha’s teacher was unceremoniously removed from the village.

4 Siddhartha

The residents of the nearby village were enraged with Siddhartha, demanding to know why he had allowed the wolf to eat their animals and even a few of their children.

Siddhartha, however, found it difficult at first to understand what they were so riled up about. Although he had seen his disciple turn into a wolf, he simply couldn’t imagine him actually eating a child. Nor was it possible for the villagers to understand how Siddhartha could possibly be so simple-minded.

Faced with the villagers’ wrath, Siddhartha tried to explain that he was unfamiliar with the ways of wolves, and that in any case he had no control over the wolf’s actions. But it was of no avail, for the villagers’ sorrow had closed their ears, and all that mattered to them was the fact that the wolf had come from Siddhartha’s hermitage.

Making a hasty exit from his hermitage, he went straight to see his teacher to try to find out where he had gone wrong.

His teacher took one look at him and asked, “How is it that there is only one line of thought left in your mind?”

After all, isn’t the mind composed of a large number of interwoven threads?

When Siddhartha told his teacher that these days he only ate zhengzhi, his teacher remained silent, since he had once clearly admonished him that for one passing through a wide open expanse or swimming in the ocean, the most important thing is to keep moving.

2 Siddhartha II

2  siddhartha

As Siddhartha walked along, he thought about how he might help that unfortunate man he had just seen lying on the side of the road, groaning in pain. Thereupon he brought the man some water and food, and also arranged for some medical care. Once the man recovered, he was so grateful that he went about telling everyone he knew, “Whatever difficulty you are facing, go to Siddhartha; he will surely help you out!”

Afterwards, needy people began to gather around Siddhartha, and by the time the crowds had become quite large, he was filled with the joy that comes from helping others. However, he also realized that his resources for doing so were quite limited, so he began an all-out effort to solicit support for his relief work.

Everywhere it was heard, “SiddharthaSiddharthaSiddhartha.”

When the wolf heard about Siddhartha’s largesse, he thought to himself, “How about if I ask him for some of his clothing? Dressed in Siddhartha’s clothes, I will surely look so imposing and intimidating that the tiger will stop chasing me off and even men---the most arrogant of all creatures---will bow down and pay obeisance at my feet. What in the whole wide world could be better than that?”

After giving the wolf some of his clothing, all the other animalsbegan coming to Siddhartha with their requests. However, since he was unfamiliar with their customs and languages, chaos began to unfold. Due to his chance encounter with a person in need, Siddhartha had forgotten that his original purpose was to engage in spiritual practice, and now found himself unable to return to it.

3 Siddhartha III

3 Siddhartha III

Siddhartha was visited by a man who was keen on engaging in spiritual practice, and asked to become his disciple. Pleased at the prospect of finally having an eager and motivated protégé, he readily agreed. After some time, however, Siddhartha discovered that his disciple occasionally took on the appearance of a fearsome wolf, leaving him at a loss as to how he should deal with this most unusual situation. However, he had read in the scriptures that even animals could have noble sentiments, so he decided to keep him as his disciple, confident that his good example would rub off and that one day he would stop turning into a wolf.

Whenever the disciple turned into a wolf, he would go out hunting for the kind of food he liked to eat, which was very different from the kind Siddhartha gave him to eat---and he indulged to his heart’s content.

Siddhartha only ate shengzhi, and although doing so sometimes left him feeling hungry, he had already become quite accustomed to it. In fact, living on shengzhi had become so much a part of his life that he had never even considered what it would be like to do otherwise. It had never occurred to him that living beings are extremely diverse in their ways of life, and that it’s simply not possible for all of them to eat shengzhi.

His diet had changed his way of thinking and perceivingsuch that he had begun to believe that shengzhi is the only food in the entire world.

The Wandering Adventures of Siddhartha Episode 1

The Wandering Adventures of Siddhartha Episode 1

Having entered into the midst of a crowdSiddhartha is approached by a seasoned yogi, who says, “You need to first make some merit; practicing generosity is what you need to do!”

Thereupon, Siddhartha began to actively seek out those who were suffering hardship, making every effort to provide them with whatever they needed. However, the recipients of his largesse indignantly responded with such words as, “Sure I need some help, buy I don’t want to know where it’s coming from.”

The next time Siddhartha was amongst a crowd, a yogi said to him, “You ought to lead miscreants and evil-doers onto the path of righteousness, thinking, ‘If I myself don’t rescue the beings suffering torments in the hell realms, then who will?’”

With much effort and hardship, Siddhartha finally succeeded in opening the gates of hell. But when he entered, the denizens of hell refused to be rescued, telling him, “I’ve become so accustomed to the fires of hell, that now I would find it difficult to go out and stay in a drafty place!”

The next time Siddhartha was amongst people, he chose to remain oblivious to both good and evil, but without distancing himself from the crowd.
