Greetings, friends of NanZen!
Someone asked what "Śūnyatā" is.
I summarize and integrate "eight
negations" in Nāgārjuna’s Middle Way into a set of
"Śūnyatā" ideas as my own guides to investigate and practice
"Śūnyatā".
I have been doing this for more than 30
years. I often contemplatethe "Śūnyatā" in the context of causes and
conditions, and investigate it from shallow to deep all year round. In
approaching the Buddhist idea of "Śūnyatā", it’s necessary to have a
clear understanding of "conditions".
(That is to say, the comprehending of
"Śūnyatā" in Buddhism is based on Dependent Origination. The ideas
resulting from our contemplating Dependent Origination must not contradict thories of "Śūnyatā")
Nagarjuna’s Middle Way:
Mulamadhyamakakarika supplements
further that phenomena resulting from causes and conditions andtheir states are
Śūnyatā.

In short, the definition of
"Śūnyatā" is "no immutability, noindependence, no reality"
(Venerable Yinshun’s Lectures on the Maha-Prajna-Sutra). What
"Śūnyatā" denies is the essence of things, but not the changing
phenomena of emergence/cease of things in the world. All these are by no means
"nothing"!
It’s like the scenes seen in dreams are
unreal, but the occurrence and impact of dreams can’t be denied. (Excerpted
