Formless Samādhi 7 – On Nirvana with Remainder

如美國學者 Gregory SchopenL.S.

Formless Samādhi 7 – On Nirvana with Remainder

Excerpt about Three Samādhis from the Chinese Buddhist Dictionary :

"Formless Samadhi" is a kind of deep meditation that connects with the four qualities of Nirvana: stopping, calmness, subtlety, and detachment.

Nirvana is said to free from the five sense objects—form, sound, smell, taste, and touch—as well as the dual characteristics of gender and three marks of conditioned phenomena (excluding the mark of continuity). That’s why it’s called “formless.”

My Interpretation:

1. The text says Nirvana transcends all sensory experiences such as form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. If that’s the case, how can a practitioner who has entered Nirvana still possess any conscious awareness?

2. Consider the case of an Arhat who has attained "Nirvana with Remainder":

AI Data:

"Nirvana with Remainder" refers to a liberated state where all mental defilements have been eliminated, but the physical form—the five aggregates—still remains.

This is the condition of an Arhat or Buddha who has awakened but not yet physically passed away.

My Interpretation:

Even an Arhat still has a physical body.

Can we really say that they have no perception at all of form, taste, smell, or touch when eating food?

Ask yourself: if your body existed in a world without any sensory experience, would you still want to live?

And this is someone who has already transcended life and death, and for whom these things no longer pose any threat.

3. The topic of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch came up most clearly during Devadatta’s attempt to break away from the Buddha’s Sangha.

He effectively proposed an alternative system of rules and structure for the monastic community.

Although he is traditionally viewed as an evil person who fell into hell,

his teachings did continue to influence later developments.

In the Buddha’s Sangha, it was Devadatta who started arguments about food rules.

These debates didn’t stop.

In fact, the monks who supported Devadatta began writing about how the five senses—form, sound, smell, taste, and touch—could be used in deep meditation (samadhi).

Was this a way to help Devadatta gain recognition in Buddhism?

They even claimed this was the highest Buddhist practice,

so that people would believe in him.

Maybe this is why so many later Mahayana sutrasdeclare themselves to be the supreme teaching—the “King of the Dharma.”

This is my personal reflection.

Master Banji

AI Data:

Devadatta wanted monks to follow five much stricter rules. He thought the Buddha’s teachings were too relaxed, and he tried to break away and form a new group:

● Always live in the forest
● Only wear robes made from rags (not ones given by laypeople)
● Always go begging for food (never accept invitations)
● Only sleep under trees (never in houses)
● Never eat salt, meat, or flavored food (must eat only plain vegetarian food)

The Buddha didn’t fully accept these rules. He believed people should follow what fits their own level and ability.

Devadatta then split from the Sangha and started a new group called the "Pure Practice School."

The disagreement between Devadatta and the Buddha was likely about:

● How strict the monastic rules should be
● How to deal with society (such as receiving support from kings)

Modern scholars like Gregory Schopen and L.S. Cousins believe:

In early Buddhism, there was not just one group. Instead, there were many different schools and ideas.

Devadatta’s actions may reflect these early differences in beliefs.

Greetings, friends of NanZen!

Back in June, before our study club discussion, I already thought the topic of form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas was related to Devadatta. But I didn’t bother to write it down.

Yesterday, our English translator, Ms. Jui-hsin, showed me the Comprehensive Dictionary of Buddhist Studies, trying to revise some word in our English translation.

I looked at it and thought, “What exactly is this talking about?”

(I have read too many such Buddhist explanations in my youth—just glancing at them now tires me.)

So I wrote something briefly in the group chat, and today I organized and posted it.

Though I do feel passionate about Buddhism, I find myself reluctant to talk so much about it.

There’s a lot in Buddhist history that I just can’t be bothered to explain.

Haha—being pushed to explain the Dharma clearly like this…

Years ago, I was already thinking of retiring. Who would’ve thought I’d still be writing today?

Notice to English Readers

Notice to English Readers,

I do not speak English.

If you have any inquiries, please contact me by email at: masterjg05@yahoo.com.tw.

Please don’t rely on remote messages to reach out—haha.

Your understanding is appreciated.

While it is true that the Dalai Lama and many Buddhist teachers in Thailand and Cambodia use English to spread Buddhism,

they are professionally trained for such roles.

My path is focused on personal practice and research.

That’s a different approach.

Therefore, I respectfully ask that you no longer raise complaints regarding this matter.

We encourage you to contemplate the Dharma deeply and patiently.

It is a noteworthy fact that on of our American readershas already gained genuine spiritual benefit from these teachings.

We trust that, in due course, relevant insights will also reach you.

Authentic Dharma should be taught by those who have authentically realized its benefits.

With sincere regards to our European readers.

Immortal Souls

吃下加毒蛋糕與酒——無效;

被槍擊多次——仍未死;

Immortal Souls

Greetings, friends of NanZen!

We have an international reader who wanted to hear my thoughts on the person below.

AI Information:

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (about 1869–1916) was a mysterious religious figure in Russian history. He had a close relationship with the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II, and his family.

I’ve studied many types of spiritual practices outside of Buddhism.

Among them, the belief in “immortal souls” is the most common.

These so-called “immortal souls” are said to never die, and they often have great power.

In fact, many forces we call “evil spirits” come from this kind of being.

We should remember: even though the world of spirits is invisible to the human eye, it is just as vast as our own world.

These “immortal souls” often bring destruction wherever they go.

When humans no longer have enough good fortune, they can’t fight back.

Then, these spirits can do whatever they want with them.

It’s important to know that “evil spirits” usually come as invisible groups working behind the scenes.

But once we see through the ideas of karma and merit, they’re not so scary anymore.

If someone has blessings or merit, evil spirits will be blocked.

But if there’s no merit, evil forces grow stronger and become wild.

Merit may seem like something invisible,

but it’s actually the best spiritual nourishment we can have.

For example, the thinking ability of a society and how well things are done—these are signs of a healthy, nourished spirit.

Without this, society becomes poor and troubled.

AI Information (continued):

Rasputin was assassinated in 1916 by a group of nobles in a dramatic way:

Poisoned with cake and wine — but survived

Shot several times — still alive

Beaten and finally thrown into an icy river, where he drowned

Some say he was still struggling underwater. This story became a symbol of how evil cannot be killed.

My View:

These kinds of legends are often the result of powerful evil spirits protecting the person.

I studied Rasputin around ten years ago.

His story shows the deep suffering and poverty of Russia near the fall of the Tsar.

I’ve always been curious about how evil spirits manipulate the human body.

Around two years ago, I witnessed a shocking event:

five malevolent spirits had taken control of a young girl, probably around ten years old,

using her as their puppet in what looked like a supernatural performance.

Each spirit seemed to control a different part of her—one took over her flesh, one her bones, another locked down her nervous system—

all working together to produce an eerie, magical display.

Once the spirits departed, the girl's body—despite appearing to have been pierced—was completely unharmed.

Thanks to the spirits’ protection, it only looked like her body had been wounded, but in reality, nothing had physically happened.

This wasn’t a stage illusion.

It was genuine spirit possession—something truly astonishing to witness.

Evil spirits are certainly not angels.

If they were, couldn’t they have saved the Russian royal family, or healed people by removing tumors from their bodies?

That would have done great good for humanity.

So why do they only perform dark, harmful acts?

Interestingly, if they try to do anything good—like what angels do—they instantly lose their powers.

This is truly something worth exploring.

(To the Russian reader who’s been following for days — may the Dharma grow stronger day by day.)

Greetings, friends of NanZen!

After finishing my writing on Samādhi of Buddha Recitation ,” I skipped lunch and went straight to rest. I'm still recovering from a cold and my energy hasn't fully returned yet.

While I was resting, a reader from the United States reached out to me, expressing his realization—🙏

Within just one hour, he had gained a genuine benefit from the Dharma. Congratulations to him! 🎉🎈

This reader, who is also a disciple and has been a great support to me, deserves a few words in return.

I don’t intend to enter Nirvana just yet. With progress made in my own practice, I now need to consider how to proceed into the next phase.

As for human affairs, they are never perfectly smooth. Life is full of challenges—and I accept them all. It’s really that simple.

To all of you in the U.S. who worry about me—I am fully aware of your care.

It is precisely this support and your wholsome roots that have enabled you to receive the Dharma’s blessings. 👍

I have long grieved over the interruption of the Buddha’s true teachings.

In this life, I am deeply fortunate—to understand them, to practice them, and to have the capacity to continue this path.

I never imagined I would be able to clearly express these teachings and bring benefit to so many.

The continuation of the Dharma is a shared blessing—and the most important thing we can do.

This success is a collective one.

Without everyone’s help, it couldn’t have progressed so quickly.

So let’s take pride in what we’ve achieved.

Thank you to all my readers around the world for your support.

And may you all, like our friend in the United States, gain deep benefit from the Dharma.
