原始佛教對如何從「名色分別智」一步步修到「漏盡解脫」有非常細致且標準化的修行階智(如十六觀智);

Be Cautious

Those who sincerely wish to cultivate real strength in the practice of Chinese Buddhism should examine this carefully.

Eminent Chinese monks throughout history are indeed admirable for their meditative strength and moral cultivation.

However, from the perspective of the Dharma, their explanations in fact lack logical consistency within the framework of Buddhist doctrine.

Do not criticize me for stating this. Calm down and examine the evidence yourself—I have already presented it in my writings.

Facts are facts. Respect what should be respected, but the Dharma must still be clarified clearly, one point at a time.

1. Conceptual Confusion: “Textual Knowledge” Replacing “Experiential Insight”

In early Buddhism, “wisdom” refers to vipassanā(insight). It is based on steady, focused mindfulness,

and it directly observes bodily and mental phenomena (nāma–rūpa) as impermanent, unsatisfactory, and non-self.

However, as Buddhism developed in China—blending with Daoist and metaphysical traditions—two common deviations appeared:

1. Philosophical abstraction and verbal expression:

Wisdom was turned into conceptual thinking, clever sayings, or intellectual interpretation of texts. This becomes a kind of “dry wisdom” that lacks real experience.

2. Valuing understanding over realization:
Although Chan (Zen) teaches “sudden awakening,” many people mistake intellectual understanding (conceptual insight) for true realization (the actual ending of defilements).

True liberation through wisdom requires that all defilements are completely ended, with no further rebirth.

But in Chinese traditions, a sense of mental clarity or intellectual understanding is often mistaken for liberation. As a result, very few people truly eliminate defilements.

2. A Transformation in Practice: Moving Away from the Four Foundations of Mindfulness

The arising of liberation through wisdom depends strictly on the actual practice of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness—observing body, feelings, mind, and phenomena step by step.

Shift in practice methods:
Over time, mainstream Chinese Buddhist practice shifted toward methods such as “observing the mind” (Chan), reciting the Buddha’s name (Pure Land), or mantra practice (Esoteric Buddhism).

Chan emphasizes “directly pointing to the mind and seeing one’s nature to become Buddha.”
This is a very advanced path that requires high capability.

Without sufficient ability, practitioners can easily fall into the trap of talking about mind and nature without changing their habits.

Lack of practical stages:
Early Buddhism provides detailed and systematic stages of insight—from clearly distinguishing mind and matter to the complete ending of defilements (such as the sixteen stages of insight knowledge).

In contrast,

Chinese Buddhist teaching often gives general and abstract advice (such as “let go” or “follow conditions”), but lacks precise, step-by-step guidance for removing subtle defilements.

3. A Shift in the Ultimate Goal: The Spread of Pure Land Faith and the Bodhisattva Path

Chinese Buddhism eventually formed a pattern described as: “Doctrine in Tiantai and Huayan; practice in Chan, Pure Land, and Esoteric traditions.” Among these, Pure Land is the most widely practiced.

Reliance on other-power and rebirth:
Since the present age is often seen as a degenerate era, it is considered extremely difficult to end all defilements through one’s own effort.

Therefore, the main goal shifted toward “being reborn in the Pure Land with remaining karma, and attaining Buddhahood there.”

The Bodhisattva view of life and death:
Mahāyāna Buddhism emphasizes remaining in the cycle of birth and death to benefit others, rather than entering final nirvāṇa too early.

It teaches “retaining defilements to continue existence” and not entering nirvāṇa prematurely.

This value orientation leads many practitioners to no longer aim for achieving liberation through wisdom in this very life.

Happy Mid-autumn Festival, Dear Readers.

The image below is AI-generated.

About fifteen years ago, I stepped out of the NanZen hall and saw a formation of white clouds above me, similar to this image.

A voice prompted me to take a photo, but I had neither the mood nor the strength. What seemed like a “heavenly message” did not move me—it repelled me. I understood its meaning, but I chose not to respond.

At that time, I had already gained certain insights through practice, but those belong to the past.

I did not take the photo. In the cloud, there was a clear image of a young boy.

More than a decade later, such “messages” have continued to appear, one after another.

(Readers who have not seen them may scroll down.)

Recently, someone said that the earlier image of a mother and child in the cloud symbolized “being born and sustained by heaven.”

In this life, my only wish has been to attain realization through practice. I have no other ambition.

Yet there remains a sense that destiny cannot be avoided.

Some may recall that when Chinese military aircraft began entering Taiwan’s airspace, I said: I would not leave Taiwan. This was not said lightly—I had made my preparations.

My elderly teacher once told me:

“If someone curses you above your head every day, it is a serious matter.”

I have not forgotten this.

Much preparation led to the article written on the 23rd.

Time passes quickly. I hope for peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait.

This mind is not that mind.

This mind is not that mind.

Yesterday, after adding supplementary material to the article Liberation by Wisdom, reader feedback was very positive.

Such writing is not based on data alone.

Without personally witnessing the excellence of outstanding individuals in India, it would not have been possible.

We know others only through our own cognition.

After a lifetime of studying the Dharma,

have we learned anything beyond our own perceptions?

Liberation by Wisdom

Liberation by Wisdom

My earlier understanding of “liberation by wisdom” was:

As stated in the Saṃyukta Āgama (e.g., Discourse 43), in the case of an ordinary person, when form changes or becomes otherwise, the mind correspondingly follows and turns; once the mind has turned, associated processes of change arise.

In contrast, for a noble disciple, although form changes or becomes otherwise,

the mind does not follow or turn; since the mind does not turn, no associated processes of change arise.

Later, I realized that explaining this only in terms of “mind” is too simplistic, so I did not define it further.

Recently, after encountering intellectually sharp individuals from India,

I reconsidered this issue. Although the texts use the word “mind,” its meaning in the Indian context differs from the Chinese understanding.

Only with that depth of meaning can “liberation by wisdom” be reached.

This “mind” is not simple—it has the capacity to integrate and understand the aggregates,

sense bases, and elements. Only then can such liberation occur.

Personally, I have found these frameworks difficult to apply in practice.

Instead, I rely on “arising and ceasing through causes and conditions,” together with Madhyamaka—The Doctrine of Śūnyatā, as the basis of my practice.

From a broader perspective, “liberation by wisdom” may also refer to how deep knowledge can expand one’s understanding of life.

It need not be restricted to religious definitions or become a subject of dispute.

However, in practicing the Buddhadharma, one should still interpret and realize it according to the Dharma.

For reference.

Wisdom Liberation in the Saṃyukta Āgama

In the Saṃyukta Āgama, “liberation through wisdom” (Pali: paññāvimutta) refers to a noble practitioner who may not have fully developed deep meditative absorptions (such as cessation attainment or the four jhānas and formless attainments),

yet has completely eliminated all defilements through direct insight into dependent origination, impermanence, and non-self.

Core Meaning and Characteristics

Complete ending of defilements:
An arahant liberated by wisdom has fully eliminated greed, hatred, and delusion—just like an arahant who is liberated through both concentration and wisdom. Both realize final nirvāṇa.

Difference in concentration:
Those liberated through both concentration and wisdom possess deep meditative attainments (such as the eight liberations or cessation).

In contrast, those liberated by wisdom may not enter such advanced states. Their concentration may reach only the first jhāna, access concentration, or basic right concentration. However, their wisdom alone is sufficient for liberation.

Key to liberation:
Liberation comes from directly observing and deeply understanding teachings such as the five aggregates, dependent origination, and the Four Noble Truths. Through this, one completely lets go of self-centered attachment.

Canonical Expression and Realization

Direct knowledge and confirmation:
In the Āgama texts, when a practitioner attains realization,

they often declare:
“Birth is ended, the holy life has been fulfilled, what had to be done is done, there will be no further rebirth.”
This expresses both liberation of mind and liberation through wisdom.

Knowledge of phenomena and knowledge of nirvāṇa:
A practitioner first develops “knowledge of how phenomena operate” (understanding the causal flow of dependent origination in the world).
From this, “knowledge of nirvāṇa” arises (realizing the unconditioned state of cessation).

Even without relying on deep meditative absorption, one can still attain complete liberation.
