Ignorance
While reading a talk by the renowned Thai
monk Ajahn Mun, one thing in particular struck me as significant.
He admits that when he first began reading
the Buddhist scriptures, he was utterly perplexed by the terms “ignorance,”
“non-ignorance,” and “beginningless ignorance.”
Another way of putting it would be to say
that there is darkness within darkness, and that within darkness there is
fundamental darkness. Ha!
Having wasted many years on this, I’d like
to say that confronting ignorance means clarifying one's internal and external
problems, and can even involve struggling with oneself on the level of
consciousness.
If you’ve never struggled with yourself,
then you won’t be able to understand the Buddhist scriptures!
When you don’t understand the scriptures,
you give rise to “beginningless ignorance,” and the like. Better to stop
struggling, and forget about beginningless ignorance, lest you get further
entangled in it. Otherwise, the more you discuss it, the further you will be
from understanding it!
